Courses for teachers

A course holds the material and tasks for one class. You also decide how your students may use the AI there.

Create a course

1

Basics

Open Courses in the menu and choose Create course. Only the Course name is required. You can add a Subject, a Class or year and a Description.

2

Cover

Under Cover you pick a pattern or use Upload image for your own picture (JPG, PNG or WebP, up to 10 MB). For your own picture, Crop sets which part is shown. Generate with AI suggests a pattern that fits the name and subject.

3

Choose content

Empty starts the course with the empty section “General”. AI suggestions and All templates offer ready-made course templates by subject and topic. Copy takes over one of your courses (see below).

4

Review and create

Check the details and choose Create. The course opens on its Overview.

Tip

You can change the name, subject, description and cover at any time in the Settings tab.

Sections and content

A course is split into sections, for example by week or topic. Add section creates a new one. Add activity or material fills a section. You can choose:

Material

A file, a video or an H5P quiz. Upload the file or pick it with Choose from the library.

Worksheet

One of your worksheets. Students work on it in the course and you see the results.

Feedback task

One of your feedback tasks. Students hand in an answer and get feedback from the AI.

Assignment

Instructions for which students upload files. A due date with a time is optional.

Lesson series

One of your lesson series with all its lessons, materials and tasks.

AI agent

A chat with the AI for this course. Under Instructions for the AI (optional) you set how it answers, for example with hints only. Students do not see these instructions.

App

One of your own apps, played in the course. More under Apps and App Studio.

Link

A web page. The address starts with https://.

Note

A short text that sits right in the section.

Copies from the library

Files, worksheets, feedback tasks and lesson series from your library are copied into the course. Later changes in the library do not change the course.

Arrange content

Every entry has a menu with these actions:

  • Rename: change the title. Notes do not have this action.
  • Move up, Move down: change the order within the section. These actions exist only on the overview.
  • Move to section: move the entry to another section, if the course has more than one.
  • Pin: The entry appears at the top of the overview under Pinned. Unpin takes it out again.
  • Hide from students: Only teachers see the entry. Show to students makes it visible again.
  • Remove: For an assignment, all its submissions and grades are deleted as well.

A section can be renamed, hidden from students and removed. Removing it also deletes its content.

Appointments

In the Appointments tab, Create appointment adds lessons and other dates: Date, From, To and Title, plus a place and a note if you like. The next appointment shows on the course overview and in the course list.

  • Cancel appointment: The appointment stays visible and is marked as cancelled.
  • Reinstate: undoes the cancellation.
  • Delete: removes the appointment for good.

Invite students and teachers

Join code

Every course has a join code. Students enter it under Courses with Join course. You find the code in the Members tab under Invite people and in the Settings. Generate new code makes the old code invalid.

Join link

The link ends in /k/ and the code. Whoever opens it sees the course and joins with one click. People without an account only enter a name and get a personal access code. With it they get back into the course later, also on another device.

Turn joining off

Turn off the Public join link in the Settings when nobody else should join. Neither the link nor the code then works for new members. Everyone already in the course stays a member.

Invite by email

Under Invite people you enter an Email address and choose the Role: Teacher for colleagues, Student for learners. The person gets an email and accepts under Invitations with Accept. Their email address must be confirmed for this.

Other teachers

Invited teachers can edit the course like you. Only the person who created the course can delete it.

Members

The Members tab lists all teachers and students and when they were last active. People who joined through the link are marked Via link. Students do not see this list.

  • Role: switch between teacher and student.
  • Remove from course: The person loses access. Their submissions are kept.
  • Reset access code: for members without an account who lost their code. The new code is shown only once and the old one stops working. This is not possible for a guest who is in several courses.
  • Withdraw invitation: for invitations that have not been accepted yet.

Grade submissions

1

Open the submissions

Open the assignment in the course. Under Submissions you see who has handed in and who was late.

2

Grade

Choose Grade for a submission. Under Result pick Passed or Revise, and add a grade and Feedback if you like.

3

Return

After Save the student does not see the grading yet. Only Return shows it. With Revise the student can upload a new version.

Worksheets and feedback tasks

You see the results with Edit and see results on the entry’s page. That is also where you change this course’s copy.

AI in the course

In the Settings tab, AI in the course sets what students can do with the AI. Teachers can always use it.

  • AI for students: turns the AI on or off for students.
  • How the AI answers: Learning companion gives hints and asks questions back, but no finished solutions. Course content only answers only from the course material. Open also answers questions beyond the course.
  • Features: allow Create images, Web search and Attach files one by one.
  • Messages per student and day: 20, 50, 100 or No limit.
  • AI for guests: applies to everyone who joined through the public join link.
  • Pause the AI: for tests and exams, for example 1 hour, Until this evening or until a time you choose. End pause ends it early.

Lock the AI until the due date

When you create an assignment with a due date, you can turn on Lock the AI until the due date. Students then cannot use the AI in the course until the due date has passed.

Good to know

New courses start with Learning companion, 50 messages a day and the AI for guests switched off. Students use the AI only in their courses. You do not see your students’ chats.

View as student

View as student at the top of the course shows it the way students see it. Hidden entries are missing there. Nothing is saved in this view. Leave view takes you back.

Archive and copy

Archive a course

Choose Archive course in the Settings or in the course’s menu in the course list. The course is then read-only for everyone and appears in the course list under Archived. Restore makes it editable again. Only the person who created the course can delete it for good, with Delete course.

Copy a course

Choose Create course and, in the Choose content step, the option Copy. Under Course to copy pick one of your courses. The new course takes over sections, content, files and the AI settings. Members, submissions, due dates and appointments are not copied.

Apps when copying

Your own apps stay linked. If an app belongs to another teacher, you get your own copy of its shared version, released for your courses only. If the app is not shared or the copy fails, the activity shows This app is not available. App data is not copied, so the new course starts without entries.
